My simple indoor lighting trick for photography

Aug 31, 2020

I’m a natural light photographer. I’ll choose the sun everytime over artificial lights when it comes to photography. But when you want to capture every day moments indoors, natural light doesn’t always appear where you want it. Here’s the simple indoor lighting trick I use to photograph my kids and pets inside.

  1. Find a window where the most light enters the house.
  2. Face your subject at a 45 degree angle toward the window.
  3. Use a large piece of white paper, cardboard or even a white sheet to reflect the sunlight on your subject. You’ll place this directly across from the window.
  4. That’s it. It really is that simple.

Here is a look at how I set up my spot to photograph my baby boy for his 8-month-old photos.

I used a reflector to bounce the most amount of light. But I also tried out a large white piece of poster board which worked great as well. When Sawyer was sitting at a 90-degree angle from the window, the wasn’t any light on the right side of his face, so I need to bounce the light onto that side of him for even lighting.

Once I added the reflector, the lighting was much better, but still a bit uneven. So I turned Sawyer toward the window.

And perfection! His big sisters had to also get in on the photography action. His personal paparazzi.
