Your professional headshot is often the first impression someone has of you.
Whether they’re finding you on LinkedIn, visiting your company’s website, reading your bio before a meeting, or checking out your speaker profile, that little square photo is doing more work than you might realize.
So, how often should you update your professional headshot?
A good rule of thumb is every 2–3 years, but the real answer has less to do with the calendar and more to do with whether your photo still looks and feels like you.

Here are a few signs it might be time for a refresh.
1. You don’t look like your headshot anymore
This is probably the most obvious sign—and one of the most important.
If someone who hasn’t met you before would have trouble recognizing you from your professional photo, it’s time for an update.
Maybe you’ve changed your hairstyle, started or stopped wearing glasses, grown a beard, or simply changed a little over the years. Your headshot doesn’t need to capture every tiny change, but it should look like the person who is going to walk into the room.
Your headshot should help people recognize you, not make them wonder which version of you they’re going to meet.
2. Your career has changed
A new job, promotion, leadership role or career pivot is a great reason to update your headshot.
Your professional image should reflect where you’re going—not necessarily where you’ve been.
Starting a new position? Update your LinkedIn profile.
Moving into a leadership role? Make sure your photo reflects the confidence and professionalism you’re bringing to that role.
Launching a business? Your headshot becomes an important part of your brand.
And if you’re changing industries, your old headshot may no longer communicate the impression you want to make.
3. Your headshot is more than three years old
There’s no magical expiration date on a headshot. If you love your photo and it still looks like you, there’s no need to replace it simply because a certain number of birthdays have passed.
But photography styles, websites and personal brands evolve.
A headshot from 2017 might technically still look like you—but if the lighting, background, clothing or overall style makes your profile feel dated, it’s probably time for an update.
Think of your headshot as part of your professional wardrobe.
You wouldn’t necessarily wear the same suit or dress for ten years. Your professional image deserves the occasional refresh, too.
4. Your company has rebranded
This one is easy to overlook.
If your company has updated its logo, website, colors or overall visual identity, your team photography should feel like it belongs with the new brand.
And that doesn’t necessarily mean every employee needs a completely different pose.
Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from simply creating consistency.
The same lighting.
The same background.
The same general framing.
The same quality of photography.
When your team page looks cohesive, it immediately feels more polished and intentional.
5. Your team has grown
If your company has hired a lot of new employees, you may have ended up with a collection of headshots taken at different times, by different photographers and under very different circumstances.
One person has a white background.
Another has a gray background.
Someone else has an outdoor photo.
And the newest employee used their iPhone.
Sound familiar?
A company-wide headshot refresh can be a surprisingly simple way to make your website feel more professional—and you don’t necessarily have to photograph your entire company at once.
A well-planned corporate headshot session can be designed around your hiring schedule, office locations and workflow.
6. You’re embarrassed by your current photo
Let’s be honest.
Sometimes the biggest sign that you need a new headshot is simply:
You don’t like the one you have.
Maybe you hate the way you look in it.
Maybe it feels stiff and uncomfortable.
Maybe it was taken by a coworker against a conference-room wall.
Or maybe you just don’t feel like it represents you.
You don’t have to love having your picture taken to have a great headshot.
In fact, many of my clients start by telling me exactly that:
“I hate having my picture taken.”
That’s okay.
Creating a relaxed experience is just as important as creating a technically beautiful photograph. My goal isn’t to turn you into someone you’re not. It’s to help you look confident, approachable and genuinely like yourself.
What about corporate teams?

If you’re responsible for managing your company’s website, marketing or team communications, updating headshots can feel like a much bigger project than simply scheduling a photographer.
There are employees to coordinate, schedules to manage, locations to consider and, sometimes, multiple offices involved.
That’s where a streamlined corporate headshot experience can make a difference.
For larger teams, I can photograph employees efficiently on location, create a consistent look across the entire team, and make the process as easy as possible for both the company and the people stepping in front of the camera.
And because nobody wants to spend an entire workday getting their picture taken, efficiency matters.
The goal is professional, polished headshots without disrupting everyone’s day.
So…when should you update your professional headshot?
If you’re looking at your current photo and thinking, “Hmm. Maybe it’s time,” it probably is.
You don’t have to wait for a new job, a new haircut or a major life change.
Sometimes it’s simply time to make sure your professional image reflects who you are today and where you’re headed next.
And if your entire team could use an update, it’s worth starting the conversation early. Corporate headshot projects take a little planning, especially when you’re coordinating multiple employees or locations.
