Spring vs. Fall: The Best Time for a Pet Photo Session in Raleigh

Mar 5, 2025

If you’re trying to decide when to book your next pet photo session in Raleigh, you might be leaning toward fall. After all, golden leaves and crisp air sound dreamy, right? But what if I told you that spring is actually the BEST season – and my favorite – for capturing your family’s love—especially here in the Triangle?

From vibrant colors to better weather and more flexibility, here’s why spring beats fall when it comes to scheduling your next photo session with your dog.

1. More Vibrant & Predictable Colors

Fall leaves can be beautiful—but they’re unpredictable. Peak foliage varies year to year, and one strong storm can wipe out the color overnight. In contrast, spring in the Triangle is bursting with fresh blooms, lush greenery, and soft pastels that create a dreamy, timeless backdrop. Our local parks explode with azaleas, cherry blossoms, tulips, and more, offering stunning settings that last for weeks.

Pet-Friendly photo locations in the Triangle:

  • Sarah P. Duke Gardens (Durham) – A gorgeous mix of cherry blossoms, tulips, and vibrant landscapes make this a picture-perfect setting. (Please note, photography permits are required here and start at $150).
  • Dorothea Dix Park (Raleigh) – Famous for its vast fields of golden daffodils in early spring, offering a cheerful and bright backdrop. There is so much space here that it is a nice place to take your pup and not have too many distractions.
  • WRAL Azalea Garden (Raleigh) – If you love bold colors, this garden is a must with its stunning azalea blooms. I worked at WRAL for 5+ years as a reporter. I never saw a single dead blade of grass…ever. This location is quite popular during the spring and can become overcrowded.
  • Pullen Park (Raleigh) – A great option for families with kids, featuring scenic greenery and fun park elements. It can be a nice place on a week night when it’s less crowded.
  • Coker Arboretum (Chapel Hill) – A peaceful, natural setting filled with blooming trees and a variety of seasonal flowers.
  • Fred Fletcher Park (Raleigh) – This is one of my favorite spots. It is a popular evening place for people who live nearby to walk their dogs so it can be tricky for dogs who don’t like other dogs.

2. No Competing with Hurricane Season & Fall Heat

Many people think of fall as crisp and cool, but here in North Carolina, we often still have humid, summer-like days well into October (I was putting on mosquito spray last Halloween). Plus, hurricane season can bring unpredictable storms, leading to last-minute reschedules. Spring generally brings milder temperatures, making it a much more pleasant experience for everyone—especially dogs with thick coats!

3. More Availability = The Best Dates for You

Fall is the busiest season for photographers. Everyone is scrambling to book last-minute holiday sessions, which means popular dates fill up fast. In spring, you’re far more likely to get a session that fits your schedule—without the stress of competing for an open spot. One more reason I vote for spring as the best season for pet photos in the Triangle.

4. More Time to Prepare for Holiday Gifts

One of the biggest perks of a spring photo session? You’ll have your images well before the holiday rush! Whether you want to create a custom Christmas card, order prints for gifts, or design a beautiful wall gallery for your home, spring gives you the extra time to plan without the last-minute holiday crunch.

5. Your Pets Will Thank You

Spring is a much better choice for a pet photography session in Raleigh. Cooler temperatures mean happier, more comfortable pups—without the panting and overheating that often happens in late summer and early fall. Plus, spring grass is softer and lusher, making for a more beautiful and comfortable setting for your furry family members.
